Expedition 16 - 6th February 1999
Kinacarra and the Devil's Staircase

Once again, the weather forecast was off the mark and the day was not too bad, even sunny at times.
Unfortunately a nasty infection gave many of the explorers bad headaches, some of the others blamed their headaches on a party the night before. As a result we only got five explorers on this trip: Amy, Allan, David John, Ellen MacG, Robert and Stewart.

The expedition started from the Kinlochmoidart fank, from which we walked up the hill to join the old drover's path to Kinacarra. We climbed up to the top of the old Dun from which there were great views of the castle and the viewpoint over Loch na Bairness - this was when the sun came out. We then rejoined the path and continued to the Devil's Staircase where Amy once had watched the 6-Day Trial motorcyclists negotiating the climb.
After a chocolate break we continued to the road and examined the old pier and the site of Port a'Bhata from which the inhabitants were transported to Australia in 1852. Then we saw the cave once used by a tramp; David John spotted a numbered tile on the pile of stones and everyone looked at the carved initials on the wall.

We went up the hill to the old village above Kinacarra where Robert and John saw a roe deer during the ascent. At the top we examined the old houses and photographed a very old birch tree. Returning to the bottom, we looked at the millstones outside Mill House before getting the cars back to Acharacle.

The Pictures
Ellen showed the distant castle and the hill with leafless trees on it.
Allan showed the castle, with a ghost, a ruined house and someone standing next to a mill stone.
