A beautiful sunny day, warm throughout. The explorers were:
Claire, Ellen MacG. Laura, Kathryn, Margaret and Robert plus
Sheila.
The expedition started from the Arivegaig Bridge where we
transferred to Sheila's car and got a welcome lift to Gorteneorn.
Leaving the car at the top of the beach we walked along the
road to Gortenfearn, looking at the ballast stones on the
beach, nests of wood ants along the roadside and dragonflies
near the pools and ditches.
At Gortenfearn we left the road and crossed the field to the
old croft where we lit a fire and boiled water for tea. We
all examined the ruins of the old house which had been destroyed
by fire about five years before.
After lunch we walked down the path to the beach, stopping
to examine some initials and pictures of sailing boats carved
into two shed doors, and an old lime kiln discovered by Robert.
At the beach, the explorers, who were pretty hot by this time,
spent at least half an hour in the sea, several of them doing
some serious swimming, before returning up the beach which
had been used for military training for the D-Day landings
over fifty years before.
Then the expedition formed up again and made the long trek
back to the car, stopping later at the Arivegaig bridge to
do their drawings in the open air.
The Pictures
Kathryn drew a collection of items associated with the walk.
Margaret showed the whole party on the beach, Claire showed
the ants' nest, the caravan and the fire and Laura turned
out a good drawing of one of the big ants' nests.
