Expedition 29 - 28th July 1999
Dalilea to Kinlochmoidart via the Hill of Judgement

A fantastic, hot sunny day, the best for any expedition so far. Many people were away on holiday so we only had five explorers: Amy Mulhern, Anne Maree, David John, Ellen, Iain plus Jean and Frances.

The expedition started from Dalilea, where we should have seen the small pigs but they were away exploring in the woods. We climbed up through the birch woods until we reached the open country where it was very hot. We crossed the open glen and took the turn off the path to reach the walled hill on which was an ancient settlement. After a break we crossed some very wet ground to reach an old wall enclosing a field, now covered with high bracken. Following the wall round to the right we reached the stream and saw the walls which had been built to divert the stream and found a possible site of an old mill. There were some great waterfalls in this stream and the explorers enjoyed the chance to cool off.

We then crossed the field again, looking at an old building constructed against the wall. Just west of the building was an old gateway which led us up to the top of the Hill of Judgement, on which were many more remains of old habitation. From the top of the hill there was a great view down the Moidart North Channel and Amy and Iain drew sketches. Coming down from the hill we navigated an electric fence with some difficulty before going down the path to Kinlochmoidart, looking at General Ross's Cairn and the big bridge on the way.

After a welcome sit down and a drink at Jean's house the expedition moved over to the Dam Pool where the explorers, plus Frances and Suzie, had a swim around for about an hour while John fetched the car from Dalilea to take everyone back to the Centre.

The Pictures

lain once again did a sketch of the car, together with two quite nice sketches of the view down the Moidart North Channel. Ellen did an extremely simple representation of everyone and Suzie the dog with another quick sketch of the dam pool where they all swam. Amy did a single sketch showing the waterfall with rocks on one side and a big tree on the other. Anne Maree and David John attempted to show the succession of pools and waterfalls at Rinean; David John's was an extremely stylised view with an extra view of himself in the overflow channel at the dam pool and views of a freshwater mussel, a bog asphodel and a sprig of bog myrtle.
