Expedition 44 - 1st April 2000
Kylesbeg

The weather was overcast with a steady misty rain all the time we were out, but we still saw a lot in spite of the weather. The explorers were: Bernadette, David John, John Donaldson, Iain, Kathryn and Robert, with Frances Impey, Frances Maclean and Sheila, plus the dog, Suzie.
This was really three expeditions in one: first we went round the old settlement of Kylesbeg to the east of the main road to examine the cultivation areas and look for houses. We didn't find any positive houses although Kathryn found an interesting building by the stream and we also saw the remains of a corn kiln and some charcoal on a platform. Then we crossed the road, the explorers using the tunnel and getting very wet in the process, and went through the old croft at Caolas and down the track to the beach. At the beach we stopped to look at the old boat house before heading up the hill again. We found several beautiful ruined houses in this part of the woods before we reached the main road once more. Then we walked up the main road to the top of the hill with the objective of reaching the top of Egnaig Hill but the rain became more persistent and the explorers were starting to run out of steam so we just had a few minutes to enjoy the view before we walked back down the road to the cars and thence to Toad Hall for soup.
