Expedition 49 - 15th July 2000
Old Shiel Bridge and Blain

In spite of it being a good day, and many explorers saying they were intending to come, we only got two members for this expedition, Andreas and David John, with Sharon to help - maybe they were all busy making rafts for the race on the following day.
We started from the church and walked down the old road to Shielbridge, looking at the eskers and the old border of the ice sheet. Then we had a look at the old shed at Shielbridge, which could have been made out of an old church.
We walked quickly past the site of the old MacBrayne's hotel and over the old bridge where we stopped to look at the site of Katie MacNeil's accident.
Then we crossed to Blain where we looked at the smiddy and the site of the old house before crossing to the pit using the ancient route past the pines - there was a huge pinecone there. We looked at the sand martins in the pit and in the new cutting at Iain MacColl's and also at the site of the old house belonging to the Corbett family.
Finally we reached the field behind the boathouse where we stopped for a break while looking at the route of the old road from 'Peat Corner' laid out by Hope Scott. The expedition finally examined the old boathouse before returning to the centre to draw pictures.

The Pictures
Andreas drew a view from the field showing the Sithean in the background, complete with a wee winged person, and an impression of the borders of the unfinished road. David John made one of his stark drawings of the boathouse showing the rails and the winch at the top.
