This too, was not truly an expedition since it formed one
of the activities of the Feis na Garbh Chriochan, starting
at 6.30 p.m. We were well supplied with adults, having Catriona,
Tracy and Karen White, plus many of our usual explorers: David
John, Iain, Jack MacMillan, John Don., John MacArthur and
Robert and four new members: Rory from Roshven and Alice,
Connie and Rosie from Glenfinnan.
Like the last walk, this walk was planned to start with the
churchyard at Acharacle but the Feis personnel were all assembled
at the School so we left out the lower part and went straight
up the hill.
First we climbed onto the brow of the hill and John explained
where the sea level used to be, as the group passed through
the valley they saw several effects of the past glaciation.
We glanced at the old school well and climbed onto the old
lookout rock which gave a good view of the peat cutting operation
in the 1980s. Then we moved across to get a view to the west.
We moved back down the road to the gravel above the old tip
site, finding an old croft area on the way, complete with
the outline of a house.
Then we rejoined the old Ardnamurchan track and followed it
across the peat stopping to examine the chassis of an old
Dodge lorry which was once used for timber operations.
We took the left turn onto the Glenborrodale track and walked
to the top of the hill where we saw the old fank, complete
with sheep clipping platforms, although these were rather
obscured by bracken. Then, after a break for wafers, we walked
back down the track, examining some sundew plants on the way.
