This was a nice warm day, with a good turnout of people and
dogs. The young explorers were; Benjamin, Eilish, John Donaldson,
Kerry, Loren, Matthew, Robin and Thomas with Ann, Catherine,
Chris, Mairi, Michael, Pamela and Philippa helping and two
dogs, Bruce and Crunchie, guarding us from wolves and bears
(although we didn't see any).
We started at the Resipole Caravan Site, which was like a
small town, with hundreds of people all around. When we left
the Steading, however, there was hardly a soul to be seen.
We walked up past the old sheep fank and up the hill to the
river, which we were able to cross easily since there had
been no rain for a week.
On the other side of the river we were in a field full of
strange little cairns and everyone had a guess at what they
could be before we left the field and started off up the old
coffin route. When we got to the top of the hill we met a
lot of Highland Cattle who seemed quite interested in the
expedition, but didn't join us. We stopped for a breather
at the 'Air Tree' which is too complicated to explain here.
Pushing on, we made our way up to the top of the hills where
a large cairn was predicted.
Unfortunately the cairn was absent on the day we got there,
although we did see three small ones associated with the coffin
carrying. We examined three hilltops without finding the cairn
and the explorers were reluctant to carry on looking in the
heat, so we went back down and they had a game in the river.
Although we found quite a few memorable things, the best drawings
were the ones Benjamin and Eilish did of the Highland Cows.
Loren turned out one of her famous and highly coloured designs
and Matthew showed several of the explorers, the caravans
and the hills.
