Once again the forecast bad weather didn't arrive, apart from
a few flakes of snow before we set out, it was a fine day.
Yet again we got a good turnout: Abbie, Adrian, Aeneas, Alexander
Donaldson, Benjamin, Carol-Anne, Charlie, Chloe, Donald, Eilish,
James Strachan, Jamie, Kerry, Lucy, Peter William, Rebecca,
Robin, Sarah, and Thomas; six adults Averil, Dot, John Evans,
Pamela, Peter and Sandra; with two dogs, Bruce and Stan, keeping
the ground clear of any dropped food.
This was a walk for surveying historical remains, we started
at the old bridge at Blain and walked up the track to the
old village where we first looked at the outlines of two turf
houses and then walked through an area of cultivation ridges.
Just past these we found a corn kiln quite close to the track.
Then we pushed on up the hill to the lochan where we looked
at the dam and the pine plantations, and two more houses.
The second loch was frozen over and several explorers amused
themselves by throwing stones through the ice for a bit. Then
we got on the move again and stopped at the old junction where
a track branches off to Scardoish. Everyone had a chance to
catch up and get their breath before we set off up the hill
again. We stopped for another breather above Breac and were
able to pick out places along Loch Moidart where we had gone
on earlier trips. From there it was a quick scramble down
the hill to the village, where we examined the fank and all
of the buildings, including two more possible corn kilns.
We stopped for a snack in a big building with triangular windows.
After thoroughly exploring the village we set off again up
the hill. Carol-Anne phoned the Pantry from the top of the
hill and we made very good time back down to the cars again
- a most successful expedition.
