This again was a return to an old favourite. We had thirteen
explorers: Abbie, Alasdair C., Alexander, Alexandria, Allan,
Benjamin, Charlie, Jan Hendrick, John Donaldson, Peter William,
Robbie C., Sarah and Thomas; seven helpers: Catherine, Chris,
Chris M., John Dove, Johnny C., Pamela and Philippa. With
Bruce, Ellie and Lady to sniff out interesting smells.
Once again, we had quite a few cars and it took a while to
sort them all out in front of the Sinclairs' house, but we
were soon off along the river and skipping over the wet bits.
We had a short break to look at the old fishing hut, with
its interesting inscriptions and carried on to the falls where
everyone watched the Shiel water rushing past.
The next section was full of slippery bits but everyone got
across it fine and we gathered at the cairn which marks the
cairn pool - does anyone know who built it? We picked our
way across the last stretch of seaweed and rocks and had another
short stop at the tiny hut used by the shellfishers.
From this point we were on familiar ground, looking at the
buldings of Old Shielfoot village. This time we went to the
top of the village and had our break next to a rock outcrop
with good climbing trees and interesting rock crevices to
investigate. Much refreshed we crossed the top of the village
into the next glen which looked cultivated but had no old
houses. Finally we visited the corn kiln and got back to the
shore.
Our timing was fantastic, it started to rain as we approached
the cars and it poured all afternoon.
