Once again, we got a cracking day, and the best turnout of
the year so far: ten explorers: Alasdair C., Donald, Edward,
Fern, Frederik, Jan Hendrik, Kit, Robbie C., Rowan and Sterling,
with ten helpers, Carol, Christoph, Dorothy-Anne, Dot, Howard,
John Dove, Johnny C., Philippa, Sharon B., and Sue with Ellie
fetching the odd stick.
We parked at Langal and went quickly up to the Low Road, following
two horses. I explained the presence of the funerary cairns,
but got no enthusiasm for counting them on this trip, although
I think I found a couple of 'new' ones.
The walk along the old road was a pretty noisy affair, not
much chance of spotting wild animals on this trip, even the
fish cages were clear of birds. Many sticks were waved and
much chasing done, with very little bloodshed considering.
We followed the road to the fence below Austin's Croft where
everyone crossed at a bit with no barbed wire on the top.
This gave us a chance to regroup since some of the team were
dragging a bit. The sun gave us good light for a photograph
and we carried on up the hill to an old tree where we stopped
for wafers and a rest.
We got going again and followed the road up to the main road
junction and then down to the Old Poor House, where Doris
was ready to meet us and kindly let small groups in to look
at the big map on her wall. I was most impressed that Robbie
was able to identify his house on the map. It took a bit of
time for everyone to see the map and then we thanked Doris
and took our leave.
The next stop was the old bridge on the corner, which was
once said to be haunted by a witch. After that we turned off
into the oak woods and climbed the hill to eventually reach
the Fish Rock, where I got another picture. After that it
was all downhill to Langal and Dot got the explorers busy
picking up litter along the road, so we left the area a lot
tidier.
