Quite a big outing, with ten explorers and eight adults. The
explorers were Alasdair Begg, Alasdair Crawford, Benjamin,
Chris, Edward, Jamie, Jan Hendrik, Robbie, Rowan and Thomas,
with Ann Marie, Howard, Jim Kirby, Pamela, Philippa, Pia,
Sam and Sheila W. Ellie was our only dog, although Angus Clyne's
collie participated in a ball-fetching session at one stage.
This was a tricky expedition - it often turns out like that
when we have a big group following a well-marked path. Some
of the boys raced ahead with the result that when I stopped
at the caves, they were too far away to hear the whistle.
As a result, not everyone got to see the caves, or even get
a Tunnock's wafer. The rest of us had a good look at the caves
and Ann Marie was able to tell us that the seat I had formerly
thought of as built for her uncle, Graham Croal, was in fact
built a long time earlier for someone else.
Most of the party continued on to the next bay where we looked
at the boat-shaped hut and the little harbour. While this
was going on, Howard and Alasdair B were checking on our missing
explorers, who by this time were carefully going back along
the coast towards the car park and were able to rejoin the
team later.
The rest of us stopped for a break at the little settlement
on the shore below east Smirisary enjoying the sunshine and
taking a few pictures of the old buildings. Then we took the
old track up to the end of the public road and walked back
past Samalaman House to the boat house and thence to the Pantry
for a much needed rest.
The was an all-boy expedition and the imaginations of the
members rendered much of the artwork inaccessible to the rest
of us. I picked out Jan Hendrick's minimalist view of Rowan
exploring the cave.
