This was a nice, straightforward expedition in good weather
at last.
We had a select band of four explorers: Aeneas, Frederik,
Jan Hendrik and Robbie L. with Claire, Howard, Richard L.
Pamela and Philippa as senior members and Ellie and Honey
as dog members. Philippa and Ellie had additional responsibilities
later in the day and had to leave early.
We started at the south end of the village and went through
the houses one by one, with an explanation of the families
who had lived in them. A certain amount of fringe exploration
of the woods was going on at this time, culminating in the
discovery of a stiff wire aerial which was retained on the
grounds that it did not amount to a stick. Unfortunately it
did end up poking someone in the eye and the universal stick
ban was extended to include stick-like objects.
Halfway through the village we diverted up into the woods
of the Torr and climbed up to the top of the hill and looked
at the remains of the vitrified fort. We had a very pleasant
break eating our wafers at the round house and looking at
the view. Then we climbed down to the high croft between the
hills and saw the house that must have been occupied by Angus
MacPherson before he was made to leave in 1868.
We returned to the road and walked all the way down to the
junction looking at each of the houses in turn, and watching
a poor angler casting in the river with precious little success.
This was a nice, straightforward expedition in good weather,
but, alas, produced no inspired drawings, although I got a
nice shot of the team, minus Philippa and Ellie.
