Wild Cats, at first glance (and that may be the only one you get) look like big domestic tabby cats, but ask anyone who has handled one and you'll be told differently. The Scottish Wild Cat (felis sylvestris grampia) is NOT a domestic cat run wild - Wild Cats are a distinct species and have been in Scotland far longer than domestic cats - and they are untameable.

The Scottish Wild Cat is rare - estimates are vague and range between 400 and 4000 animals, but if you are lucky enough to see one in the Sunart Oakwoods area, where they are fairly commonly seen, notice the thick tail ringed in black and brown, and the very long, stiff whiskers. Adult males are twice as big as domestic cats and weigh up to 9kg.

Covering a huge area of territory both in the hills and lower land, occasionally visiting gardens, Wild Cats are solitary, meeting only for mating.
